Preening is a meticulous ritual by which cranes clean and arrange their satin plumage to ensure warming insulation and smooth flight. Cranes fluff and shake before using their slender beaks to arrange displaced feathers and spread oil from the base of their tail-feathers. Though usually performed individually for hygienic and practical purposes, preening also serves a courtship function and may involve mated pairs or several members of the flock engaging in subtle social interaction. This bashful crane, standing apart from the flock, head buried under a wing of ruffled feathers, would soon conclude his grooming and present himself anew to his fellows with a prancing, post-preening dance common among cranes vying for attention. Standing nearly 160cm tall with a wingspan reaching 250cm, he is a majestic and iconic symbol of Japan (his likeness even appears on the 1,000 yen note). Several days of travelling alongside a flock near the Kushiro Sanctuary in Hokkaido, Japan passed before this solitary moment captured the elegance, dignity and delicacy of the crane’s natural tendencies.
 
 
羽繕いは、体を温めるため、安全に飛ぶため、鳥たちにとって、必要不可欠な大事な儀式の一つです。 衛生的・実用的のために尾っぽから出る油を嘴を使って、一枚一枚の羽に丁寧に塗っていきます。油膜のおかげで、雪の中でも羽がずぶ濡れになることなく、温度調節もできます。 この恥ずかしがり屋さんのタンチョウは、群れから離れ１羽佇んでいました。 毛繕いが終わったら、群れのの中に入り、求愛のダンスをするのでしょうか。 立ち姿は私と同じ160cmほど、羽を広げるとその大きさは250cmにもなります。 1000円のお札にも印刷されるほど、日本のシンボルであり象徴的なタンチョウ。 北海道・釧路の聖地にて、尊厳のある優雅なタンチョウと共に過ごし、かけがえのない美しい瞬間を残すことができたことをとても嬉しく思います。
